2006 WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP: LAU 82-0 CL
Last Updated: Tuesday, January 16, 2007.

LAU completed its dominant campaign with record breaking gusto, smashing its own record score (76-0 against NDU in the Spring 04 season) as well as setting the highest average score in a season with their mark of 44-per-game. They also became the second team to record a perfect season, matching Balamand's Winter 04 edition – although both teams registered the feat in truncated seasons, and as of yet no team has completed a full season perfectly. Perhaps it was being denied this mark (due to NDU's suspension) that fuelled LAU's ire, with poor - in every sense of the word - Club Libanais providing fresh tarmac beneath the steamroller.

Even before the match had started, with CL missing the Liban Espoir quartet of Roy Abla, Youssef Helou, Naji Ramy and Sol Mokdad, the omens were not good, and the three debutant players in the side could be forgiven for thinking very seriously before stepping onto a rugby league field again. Such was the one-sidedness of the match that, after consultation with the match officials, the game was called off after reaching the legal 60-minute mark. LAU would almost certainly have reached 100 had they been given the opportunity.

It was the usual, efficient fare meted out by the West Beirut powerhouse, as the Immortals' trademark 'death by a thousand hit-ups' sliced through the shell-shocked CL ranks. Midway through the first half the Immortals' smallest men were running straight through their opponent's biggest, with diminutive wing Allen Khoury scoring one length of the field try direct from a kick off.

For CL, the drubbing at the hands of AUB before Christmas must now seem like a fond memory, yet amazingly, due to LAU's complete overall dominance of the season they still have a shot at what would be the ultimate act of revenge: beating LAU in the final. However unlikely a prospect it is, it is still a possibility. If AUB loses to Balamand next week and then CL wins against Balamand the following week the team that currently has a points difference of minus 140 will be in the final.
