REVIEW OF 5 YEARS OF DOMESTIC FOOTBALL

Rudy Hachache leads the way
As Lebanon prepares for the kick off of the inaugural Bank of Beirut Rugby League Championship on Saturday, Lebanese rugby league can reflect on five continuous years of domestic football in which 170 league matches have been played over ten successful Winter and Spring Championship seasons. LAU has won fully half of them, with Balamand and AUB in second with two each. Reigning champions, Jounieh (who took the title as Club Libanais last season), will be looking to match the Wolves and Razorbacks come May.

Despite war and seemingly endless political and economic crises, the Lebanese championship has played on – with only the latest season seriously disrupted, due to the fighting at Nahr El Bared making Balamand a no-go security zone. AUB, LAU and Balamand remain the backbone of the game, with Jounieh (formerly CL) created by die-hards from defunct teams at USEK and NDU, plus players from a collection of other institutions and the general public, joining them.
