LAU fullback George Rahal takes on the USJ defence

LAU scored 22 points in the final 12 minutes to put a plucky USJ Saints side away in comprehensive fashion. Wing Bahige Saidar, who scored four tries in the match, registered the crucial score in the 51st minute. USJ had just scored their fourth try to take the lead for the second time, 18-16, in a well contested match, but the scorer, centre Hanna Hajjar, made a hash of the ensuing kick off and from the scrum halfback Karim Jamal skipped through USJ’s outside backs before passing to Saidar. LAU would not be behind again.

USJ, now on an eight-match losing streak, battled on bravely until Saidar’s brace in the 68th and 72nd minutes killed them off. When fiery prop Khaled Rifai was sent off for shoving the referee a demoralised USJ side shipped in more points to finish on the end of score-line that did not reflect an entertaining and free-flowing match. LAU welcomed back international prop Robin Hachache but were without the suspended Rudy Hachache, as well as club captain Mohamed Jamil, forwards Nayef Abisaid, George Rehayem, Freddy Baeani and five-eighth Jad Hashem, showing the depth of their squad.

Veteran wing Salim Frem opened the scoring after three minutes when USJ allowed Hachache to sprint across field and link up with his backs as USJ stood and watched. But then USJ took the lead through two well taken tries by Ramy Rassy, who ran wide with success all afternoon. Saidar made it 10-10, with Jamal, excellent with the boot, missing a rare conversion. Ahmed Hammoud stole a try from acting halfback to give LAU a six-point buffer before Hajjar scored after two penalties against LAU on the hooter. The centre snatched back the lead for USJ as the game seemed to be heading for an exciting finish, only for the Saints to collapse utterly.
